The Carolina Charlies are an American professional baseball franchise based in Charleston, South Carolina. Originally called the Charleston Charlies, they are in the North American Baseball Association's Continental League, an early expansion team to the league. they have won 5 American Grand Finals titles, their last in 1969. Controversy and speculation has surrounded their meagerly sized location in Charleston, South Carolina for decades, with having called over the years for a relocation to the larger city of Charlotte. In 1982, the city of Charlotte lobbied for the team to relocate, a notion countered by the city of Charleston and fans who felt its historical location's upholding was crucial. In 1984, the team reached an agreement in the long battle amongst the two cities: the team stayed in Charleston, but under a name that represented the bistate market of both North Carolina and South Carolina, the "Carolina Charlies."
The Charlies began play in Carolina State Tobacco Park, a name whose sponsorship is evident in the team's longstanding secondary logo, showing their mascot Charlie with a cigar in his mouth. Nowadays, he is more often seen as a grittier, but non-smoking pirate.
