The New York Maries are an American professional baseball franchise based in New York City, New York. They play in the North American Baseball Association's American League. The Maries were originally known as the Empires until World War II, where, to show solidarity with the armed forces, the team changed its name to the New York Marines. After the war, a headline in the New York Post labelled them the Maries to mock them after a poor 1947 season, and after a myriad of journalists adopted this into their writing, the name stuck. The Maries are one of the original 6 teams from 1884, and have won 8 championships in their history. The most recent of these came in 1991.
